Rua can't die.

A] They can't get AFD if he dies.

B] There is no character development in his death. He's wanted to protect Ruka his whole life but never has been able to do it successfully. If he dies, when she needed him the most, it does nothing but make his character EPIC FAIL. And I just don't think it is a plausible ending to this duel.

I thought Ruka was going to break a glass bottle and use it as a weapon or something at first, haha.

And I think the spellcaster is a male. He speaks like an old man in Japanese, so I'm pretty sure it's a he. But he does look VERY girly, doesn't he? And sounds it, too, speech patterns aside.
