The Last Apprentice by Joseph Delaney.

It's a book. Not only does it have awesome fight scenes/monsters/etc., it lacks gender!fail! It has awesome female characters (good and bad) who are complex and bad ass. The main characters mentor is misogynistic, and this isn't seen as a good thing. At one point it's seen as horrifying to the main character.

It centers around this adolescent boy, Tom, who goes to apprentice with a spook, who fights demons, ghosts, and such like. Tom's mother, who is also a complex, mysterious, bad ass character, says that Tom will be the last apprentice the spook will ever have. And they fight witches.

And it's actually kind of scary at some points.
